The Elixer of Life – Water

It always surprises me when someone say they don’t like water.  Seriously?! How could you NOT like water?! Common replies are often “It’s so boring.” or “It has no taste.”. My brain tends to reply with, “But it’s sooooooooo refreshing!”

One of the great things about Austria is the water quality and I just love the fact that fresh, crisp, freezing cold mountain water (yeah, the fancy stuff people pay $5 a pop for) flows from my faucets!  It just tastes so good!  Clean, clarifying, and refreshing to my tongue, taking away all tastes.  You know how sometimes when you drink a juice or  something, sometimes it leaves this filmy taste behind; or sometimes after drinking something with flavor, even if it’s ice-cold, you still feel thirsty?  Water NEVER does that!

But to be fair, I can understand the boring part.  After sipping on it all day, I tend to eventually need something with a little flavor.  Yes, I know right!  I just said that!  But don’t forget, I’ve been sipping on it all day; probably consumed about 3 litres trying to stay cool.  This is usually the point when a batch of flavored water gets whipped up.  Not only does it look chic, but it tastes great, and it’s good for you.

I know, I know; you need ‘the how’.  Actually, it’s as easy as selecting the fruit (oranges, strawberries, cucumber, lemon, pomegranate – no bananas, sorry!) or herbs (mint, sage, rosemary, basil, thyme, etc) you like. Step two; slice/dice/muddle/bash them a little and drop them into your pitcher or glass.  Just enough that they’ll give up their essence into the water but still look fairly attractive. Third, add water (and ice, if you need it).  Fourth – enjoy!  If you want a more intense flavor, store it in the fridge overnight.  Easy right?!

Oh, and don’t think this is a one time thing; you can keep topping it off with cold water and sip from it all day!  52 Kitchen Adventures offers 50 Awesome Flavored Water recipes to inspire you.

So now tell me, which is your favorite flavored water?  Mine happens to be lemon-mint at the moment.

About A Bahamian In Austria

I am a Bahamian woman, married to an Austrian man, who's been freshly transplanted to Vienna. I started writing this blog when a dear friend insisted that I had to write down my experiences. At best it'll update my buddies on my crazy-going-ons and at least, it'll keep me from stalking them online (LOL). I hope you enjoy :D

Great post! I’ve been talking about how important daily water consumption is lots this past week for some reason. I guess because it takes some effort from me to be consistent with it. Did you know that most people are chronically dehydrated? Discovered that recently and was surprised.

    • Thanks & good for you! Yes, I’d heard of chronic dehydration previously. It’s pretty serious stuff.
Did you know that many times when we feel hungry, we’re actually thirsty? Is crazy but a glass (or two) of water can alleviate these (supposed) hunger pangs. Interesting, right?
      Here’s a glass to you!
