As you may already know, I’m really big into ‘whole’ foods and home-cooking, so I was really excited when I found this article today about spices/herbs that do the body good (click here). It’s a really good (and short) read about ‘power’ foods that not only perk up a dish but really ‘feed’ the body. While we’re on the theme, I thought I’d share this listing of essential oils that I’ve found myself referring to repeatedly for additional flavor and health benefit information (click here).
Trivia: did you know that the whole leaves, seeds, & stems of the spices we use contain more and better-preserved concentrations of their oils than the pre-ground bottles/packages we buy? If you love to cook and enjoy spices, invest in glass storage containers (better visibility and no transfer of metallic flavors to the contents) and a grinder/mill or two, like these found at Ikea. I love that the grinder is machine-washable, durable, inexpensive, and interchangeable with the containers.
Please note: essential oils are extremely powerful, please conduct full research on any oils you intend to use. In most cases, only a single drop is required. Also, test your reaction to the oils before consuming, some people have or develop sensitivity to specific oils/spices. Pregnant/breast-feeding women should abstain from using essential oils.
Happy hunting and good health!
